FASHION FOCUS: Snapshots at Ladyfag's Pop Souk, Oct. 2012

The FASHION FOCUS street team had lots of this and that happening on the day of Ladyfag’s hell-of-a-marketplace called Pop Souk, but you can breathe sighs of relief because we made the time just for YOU! :-) Held at the biergarten outside of The Standard Hotel in the meatpacking district, this event was very busy and very unique.

A variety of vendors with wares from the fluffy, to the strappy, to the feathery, to the leathery…. There were artists of all sorts, exactly what one would expect to find at any Ladyfag function. I saw a few familiar faces as I made my way through….

FASHION FOCUS: Spotlight on Linda Evangelista

Welcome back to FASHION FOCUS ladies and gents! I always appreciate your visits  :-)

There are many models out there…. so many. However, not many of them deserve to be called Supermodels. I am not the one that claims to be the expert on models, modeling, or the business in general. BUT, I do know that there are models that will stand the test of time and outlast those that come and go with each new collection. One of these superpowers is the one-and-only Linda Evangelista. (applause applause applause applause applause)

The name “Evangelista” leaves a pleasant taste in my mouth! It’s always sounded so appealing and fanciful. (Hey, do you think “fashionista” got its roots from the sound of Evangelista?) Linda Evangelista is a Canadian-born model that has been featured on over 600 magazine covers, and naturally there is much more work to consider. Evangelista is mostly known for being the longtime muse of photographer Steven Meisel, but well-known worldwide nonetheless. Evangelista began modelling when she was discovered by Elite Model Management at the 1978 Miss Teen Niagara beauty pageant. She moved to NYC and signed with Elite model management and was later convinced by fashion photographer Peter Lindbergh to cut her hair short. The haircut became a defining moment in her career, but it didn’t exclude tears from Evangelista. (So for the Top Model fans AND foes, give the girls that cry over their hair a tiny break…. Linda cried too.) :-)

Undeniably beautiful, striking in every way, great in any hair color, and always major! (I love her most in her natural color, and platinum, just sayin’.) ….. Linda serves like no other and there is TONS of proof….. take a look at these images…

A young beauty, she gave you stunning face. (Perm notwithstanding. above, I KNOW you saw that perm up there) ;-)

That iconic name, the striking and flawless face, all those covers, and the photos the photos the photos! Linda Evangelista will always be in vogue, on Vogue and in demand. her long-lasting career seems to have the ability to last as long as her long-lasting good looks. Any model should only hope to maintain a career that could even hold a candle to that of Linda’s. Keep in mind, I didn’t even dive into her acting career, her scandalous love life, or child support disputes! Keeping it FOCUSED on her beauty and talent as a model, her versatility is astonishing. Her longevity is inspiring. Her legacy is still living and looking great considering those superhero images you just experienced above.

Thank you Linda, for showing these children how to earn that respect. Looking forward to all your future endeavors!

Fashion Focus: Phenomenon

I was first introduced to the world of Phenomenon fashion at an FIT exhibit a couple years ago. I accompanied the other half to a lecture on how Japanese fashion influences America, as well as the rest of the fashion world. Photography was not allowed, otherwise that lecture, and the fashion that was on display, would be its own FASHION FOCUS piece.

Anyhoo, I remember being drawn to the Phenomenon pieces and seeing these boots….

*not to mention the rest of the look, right?* and although there was work from multiple designers, the Phenomenon pieces were the most striking. Lots of metallic energy, pieces that resembled armor, exaggerated shoulders, knees and elbows. It was futuristic male fashion warrior. It was VERY MUCH for my senses.

This 2012 S/S collection is quite toned down from the pieces I originally saw, but i enjoyed it nonetheless. “The theme of the Phenomenon 2012 S/S collection shown at Japan Fashion Week was “Nippon – Kodomo – Mirai” (“Japan – Child – Future”). The collection evoked schooldays memories with college/preppy/Ivy League elements, as well as some naval and biker influences. At the midpoint of the show, one of the models appeared in a shirt decorated front and back with colorful traditional Japanese artwork, possibly as a reminder that – despite the Western influences – this is a uniquely Japanese collection, and brand.” In my opinion, Phenomenon fashion always gives bold details that are simple yet striking to the eye. The exaggerated pockets, the mix of patterns, bold vertical and horizontal stripes, the distinct sleeves, the hint of ankle, crunchy candy sleeves, the pops of color and carefully dressed darks, the half skirt/cuffed pants……. I could go on and on… It’s simple fashion that give you a complex feel when you dive in.

So….. let’s dive in dammit! :-)

Can you see the Western meets Eastern influence mentioned in that quote? Levels and layers of traditional Japanese fashion with the ease and preppy of the Western aesthetic.

FASHION FOCUS: A few snaps at the Y-3 Show September2012

Fashion Week in NYC always brings the people OUT. INTO. THE STREETS !!! Fashion shows happen everywhere and many yearn to get into the shows….ANY shows! My hard drive was able to get a hold of some photos from inside this year’s Y-3 10th Anniversary show. (Thanks David for making this happen, and thanks Albert for holding me down on camera duty! Love you BOTH!!!)

The background/wall art was fantastic and, in my opinion, overshadowed the designs on the runway. However, from the standing-room perspective, the ever changing walls made for a terrific backdrop for these profile shots… Traditional Y-3, modern with classic edge, carefully placed 3-stripe embellishments….. and the WALLS! ….

Very minimal from a distance, but I’m sure there are intricacies upon closer inspection…






**This number with the stripes down the back is definitely my favorite of the entire show**

Sometimes it’s okay when the shot is slightly out of focus…. :-)

So there’s the show, in a nutshelll. In a sometimes blurry and out-of-focus nutshell. :-) You might see other photos from Y-3, but you will not see photos from this point of view.

I love Adidas, but I only Like Y-3. Always, nothing but respect to Yohji Yamamoto. I have many friends that identify with and LOVE Y-3. I enjoy the consistency and that although the designs change, the Y-3 essence always remains. Sleek and edgy with a structured effortlessness.

FASHION FOCUS: A few shows I Like, MBFW SPRING 2013 [video]

Fashion Week is in full swing and it’s as frenzied as usual here in the city. Everyone’s trying to get into a show, ANY SHOW! Of course it would be nice to go to all the shows and sit front row….. but how many of us get that chance?

EUREKA!!!!! The internet saves you AGAIN!!

Diane Von Furstenberg:
I like the prints. Contemporary yet classic. And those EARRINGS!! (If you pay attention you’ll know EXACTLY which ones I’m mentioning!)

Tadashi Shoji:
Very textured and elegant. Details details DETAILS! Structured against flowy.

BCBGMAXAZRIA :
Interesting lines…. can’t say that I’m crazy about it, but it did catch my eye…

Michael Kors:
I think I liked everything in this collection. Basic with a punch. Loved the hair on the girls and the oval belt is quite the eye-getter. Kors always gets me with his stripes… LOVED this show

Badgley Mischka:
Feminine and Flouncy

Elegance meets Edge…
