GLAAD announces Amplifier Award nominees

GLAAD announced the nominees for their Amplifier Awards, which honors the best in LGBT-inclusive advertising, in a press release Tuesday. The awards include categories for advertising made specifically for LGBT communities and mainstream markets.

The nominees this year include the J. C. Penney Father’s Day ad; American Apparel’s Pride campaign with transgender model Isis King, Absolut Vodka’s “Outrageous Through the Ages” ads featuring contestants from RuPaul’s Drag Race; Oreo’s controversial Pride Facebook campaign; and Amtrak’s “Ride with Pride”. A complete list of nominees can be found on GLAAD’s blog.

Hernon Graddick, GLAAD’s President, praised this year’s nominees in a press release:

“The advertising and marketing industries are catching up with the rest of the media by including more images of LGBT people in mainstream ads that target broad audiences. Americans expect to see their worlds reflected in advertising, and today that includes LGBT people and families. This year’s nominated campaigns are not only smart business decisions, but set the bar high for future images of our community in advertising and marketing.”

The ceremony will take place on October 2nd at XL Nightclub in New York City. Tickets to the event may be purchased by clicking the logo below:

Ellen DeGeneres slammed for being gay

In an effort to relaunch their brand and image, department store chain JC Penney announced openly gay talk show host and former employee Ellen DeGeneres would take over as their new spokesperson.  Apparently there are some people who are less than thrilled with this decision.

One Million Moms, a project of the American Family Association who claims they are “fed up with the filth many segments of society, especially the entertainment media” are providing children, have asked people via their website to call JC Penney to complain of the decision.  “Funny that JC Penney thinks hiring an open homosexual spokesperson will help their business when most of their customers are traditional families,” their website states.  “JC Penney has made a poor decision and must correct their mistake fast to retain loyal customers and not turn away potential new, conservative shoppers with the company’s new vision.” They also claim more sales will be lost and gained as DeGeneres is not a representative of their customers or “traditional family values.”
