Gay teen suing Indiana School System after being bullied leads to expulsion

Gay Teen Sues Indiana School System Over BullyingAn openly gay Indiana high school student is suing the school district after he was expelled from school earlier this year for carrying a stun gun to school to defend himself against bullies.

Darnell “Dynasty” Young and his mother, Chelisa Grimes, filed a lawsuit against Indianapolis Public Schools, seeking unspecified damages that says the 17 year old young man was the victim of “relentless, severe harassment” that the staff at Arsenal Tech High School in Indianapolis did nothing about.

Young was evidently expelled for firing off a stun gun on school grounds.  In May, GaySocialites.com  reported that Dynasty had taken the stun gun to school but claimed he “didn’t use it on nobody.” He said his mother gave it to him, and he carried it around for weeks before he needed to use it.  He said that  six students surrounded him, called him names, cursed and threatened to beat him up.   That’s what he pulled the stun gun from his bag and fired it into the air causing his attackers to run.

Young was expelled by the arbitrator overseeing his hearing since he fired a stun gun on school grounds.  He was original kicked out of school until January 2013. The district later reduced the penalty so Dynasty could start the fall semester, but said he would have to go to an alternative school.

Dharun Ravi found GUILTY in Webcam Spy Trial

A jury found Dharun Ravi, the former Rutgers University student charged with spying on his roommate via webcam, guilty of hate crimes today.

Following the death of Tyler Clementi, the student who jumped to his death from the George Washington Bridge after being viewed kissing another man on camera, Ravi was indicted on 15 counts, including several bias intimidation charges, because prosecutors felt Clementi was bullied for being gay. After 12 hours of deliveration over 2 days, the jury of 7 women and 5 men agreed, convicting him of bias, invasion of privacy, hindering apprehension and witness tampering. The latter charge came because Ravi attempted to change Twitter and text messages in which he encouraged other students to view the live broadcast of his roommate.

The jury concluded that Ravi did not intend to view his former roommate initially, but felt Clementi was later targeted because he was gay. The verdict carries a possible 5 – 10 year jail sentence. Ravi’s passport has also been surrendered and he faces possible deportation back to his native India. Sentencing is scheduled for May 21st.
