Late Disco Queen Donna Summer’s legendary career was due largely to her huge homosexual fan base who stuck by her side throughout the years. Then at a 1983 concert she allegedly made anti gay remarks such as “God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve,” and “I have seen the evils of homosexuality; AIDS is the result of your sins.” This was during the time when the AIDS epidemic began to rip through the LGBT community. The comments angered many of Summer’s loyal followers and there were several organized protest of her performances. But now a letter has emerged, written by Summer to AIDS activist group ACT UP denying she ever made the statements in the first place.

So remarkably did Donna Summer and Giorgio Moroder capture the ecstasy, fantasy and grit of the dance floor, they both spent many years trying to distance themselves from their extraordinary achievement. They didn’t always want to be known as “dance artists.” Summer didn’t want to “just” be the disco diva that we adored, even when for a time she wasn’t exactly thrilled to be our late night patron saint.

We’ve lost another one of the greats. The lovely and talented Donna Summer passed away today at the age of 63. There is no doubt that the singer, who got her start in the Disco era, provided many individuals with more than a few fond memories. Her album Live & More served as background music to more than a few cocktail parties thrown by close friends back on Long Island when they still spun vinyl for our rowdy group of insomniacs.
