Ricky Gervais did not have to be bleeped out the entire evening and was a blessing to the censors at the 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards. The 1927 Hollywood themed movie The Artist won the most Golden Globes with three each, including Original Score, Best Actor for Jean Dujardin, and Best Motion Picture-Drama. Dujardin started off his acceptance speech by apologizing to the audience if they did not understand him because he is French.
Another big winner was Showtime’s Homeland which picked up two awards: Best Drama Series and Best Actress in a Drama Series for Claire Danes. Danes reminisced how she was 15 years old when she won her first Golden Globe for My So-Called Life. She was “in tears because she forgot to thank her parents.” Danes brought her mother with her that night and immediately thanked her. In another heartfelt thank you to family, Michelle Williams, winning for her portrayal of Marilyn Monroe in My Weekend with Marilyn, said she considers herself a mom first and then an actress. She went on to dedicate her award to her daughter, Matilda, whom she had with the late Heath Ledger:
“I want to say thank you for sending me off to this job every day with a hug and a kiss. I couldn’t have done it any other way. It made me so excited to come home at night. And for suffering for six months of bedtime stories, where all the princesses were read aloud in a Marilyn Monroe-sounding voice.”
While Gervais behaved himself, Meryl Streep slipped out a profanity, after realizing she had forgotten her glasses and could not see her acceptance speech she wrote for her win for Best Actress in a Motion Picture-Drama for her take on Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady. Streep told the LA Times backstage:
“I can’t believe I said [that] on TV. I never do anything like that! I had such a good speech. Here it is, and I can’t see it all — I left my glasses at the table — would you like to hear it now?”
The cameras panned on the audience as the glasses made it all the way up to George Clooney (winner for The Descendants), who did not attempt to go up the stairs to give them to Streep, who praised the number of power female roles this year.
Fans of the Material Girl have something to rejoice about as well. Madonna won Best Original Song for “Masterpiece” from her directed film W.E. Later that evening, she presented Foreign Language Film and shot back at Gervais after he said she is “still like a virgin” by quipping “Ricky, if I’m still like a virgin, why do you come over here and do something about it. I haven’t kissed a girl in a few years… on TV.”
