Daytime Emmy Awards Winners!

The 2012 Daytime Emmy Awards were held on Saturday night, June 23,  and broadcast for the first time on the HLN Network.  “General Hospital” took home Outstanding Drama Series while Regis Philbin got his final award (with Kelly Ripa) for Live With Regis & Kelly! after retiring last year.  GH’s Anthony Geary picked up his seventh statue for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series and Chandler Massey won Outstanding Younger Actor in a Drama Series. Massey’s character, Will Horton,  just came out on “Days of Our Lives” and there were many Emmy-worthy moments due to Massey’s tender portrayal.  Here is a complete list of the winners:

Will Horton is gay on Days!

Same sex-relationships in soap operas have been explored before on As The World Turns, with Luke and Noah, and All My Children, with Bianca and Resse, a relationship that culminated into the first lesbian wedding for a sudser.  But Days of Our Lives never ventured  into the subject until now.  It turns out that Will Horton, the son of Sami Brady (Alison Sweeney) and Lucas Roberts (Bryan Datillo), will come out.

It is uncertain for now who Massey’s love interest will be but some have speculated it might be the character Sonny, played by Freddie Smith, who joined the show in June.  Smith himself is in the dark as to who he will be matched up with as he told Entertainment Weekly the following:

I’m going to be surprised.  There are a lot of guys on the show so it’s going to be interesting to see who I end up falling for.  Someone new?  Someone on the show?  We all make jokes, ‘who am I going to make out with first?’  It’s going to be fun to see.”

Massey earned his first Emmy nomination for Days last year and released the following statement:

“I’m thrilled to be able to portray my character in an empowering way that will show his struggle to accept who he is. It is my hope that this storyline will inspire others to be true to themselves as well.”

Viewers will start seeing Will’s struggle with his identity and journey for self-acceptance in the next coming weeks.  His sexual orientation will be obvious to both Days  and Will’s friends and family.  Bravo to NBC and Sony for allowing this story to be shown.

Co-Executive Producer Greg Meng also commends the companies “encouragement and support to tell the inspiring story of  a young man learning to deal who he is as he defines and creates his relationships with others.”

I smell another Emmy nomination (and possible win) in Chandler Massey’s future.
