Did Nicki Minaj really endorse Mitt Romney?

Not that we give two hoots as to what Nicki Minaj thinks about politics, but the rapper sent Twitter and other media outlets into a firestorm when she released a rap endorsing the Republican Presidential candidate.

“I’m a Republican voting for Mitt Romney/ You lazy bitches is fucking up the economy,” she raps in Mercy, a song off Lil’ Wayne’s new mixtape Dedication 4.

The declaration sent blogs into a frenzy to see if Minaj’s words were real or sarcastic. New York magazine reported that Minaj has previously tweeted that she thought Obama’s healthcare plan should have gone further, while Gawker attempted to fact-check the rapper’s lyrics. Her over 14.3 million Twitter reacted accordingly, with some condemning Minaj for her tweet and others’ poking fun at her.

So it is a real endorsement, or a tongue-in-cheek rap aimed at getting attention? If it is the latter, it wouldn’t be unusual for the Minaj. In an article coming out in this month’s Rolling Stone, she retracts her claim at being bisexual and claims she said it only for the attention. “I think girls are sexy,” she tells the magazine. “But I’m not going to like and say that I date girls.”

Whatever the reason, we think Ms. Minaj has some splainin’ to do.
