FASHION FOCUS: Memories of SASSOON

The precision that was and still represents Vidal Sassoon…

The haircut and the photo that changed everything…

I remember my mother and grandmother would talk about wishing they could have Sassoon haircuts. As a young boy that thought his granny had the ultimate style, if she said it, it was LAW. I didn’t know what Sassoon was then, but the sound of it was just invigorating and sexy. It’s a name I’ve never forgotten. Flecks and moments of childhood Sassoon memories float in and out of focus….

Since the recent passing of Vidal Sassoon I’ve been studying images of Sassoon hair and realizing why my grandmother, mother, and many MANY others were so taken with the ultimate experience in hair structuring. I also realized why I was so invigorated to begin with….

In my very early 20s I worked at a Cafe in Beverly Hills. One of my regulars was a Sassoon girl — (I miss her… she was gorgeous) — and she would always tell me to come over to the salon and hang, as it was right around the corner. The few times I dropped in I felt like I wanted to stay there for hours just watching them work. Or at least have one of the large portraits hanging within….. portraits that were similar to these more modern Sassoon Salon pieces…

I recently watched a 2010 documentary covering the life of  Vidal Sassoon and it really opened my eyes even more. In regards to his philosophy on hair,  I was very impressed with the way that he incorporated geometry, natural direction of hair growth, and bone structure with each haircut. I am intrigued by what was said about his work ethic and expectations of his students and stylists. I am enamored with his complete dedication to hair. And, above all else :-) ,   I am completely lusting after these haircuts and  wishing I could wear each and every one…

Those that are fortunate enough to have had their hair manicured by the one and only are indeed a lucky few. I would have loved the chance to have my bone structure analyzed and incorporated into the ultimate look designed just for me….   Thanks heavens for wigs! :-)   If only Sassoon would have thought to create a wig line!!  (I know, I know….the haircuts are on an individual basis, but there is no doubt the wigs would sell and the wig line would do well!)

Sassoon, you can finally rest your scissors! OR, maybe you’re coiffing the dolls in the afterlife, save a spot in your chair for me!

*LOOK HOW YOU WANT TO FEEL*  (I’m sure V.S. would like that line)  :-)
