More than 45,000 people gathered in on Sunday and raised over $6 million for GMHC and 40 other agency who assist those living with HIV and AIDS.

According to an email to participants, “These funds will enable GMHC and its community partners to continue their aggressive prevention and advocacy work that reaches hundreds of thousands in the tri-state area, as well as provide urgently needed food, access to medical care, counseling, linkages to safe housing, and other crucial direct services to thousands of people in need living with HIV/AIDS.”

The 2012 AIDS Walk started on the southeast side of Central Park and cut diagonally across eventually ending on the park’s west side after winding through West 110th street and Riverside Park. Walkers covered 6.2 miles with about and three hours on average.

Team GaySocialites.com participated in memory of Christopher Kambitsis, a close friend and fellow GaySocialite who we lost last October.

The AIDS Walk New York is the largest HIV/ AIDS fund-raiser in the world having raised more than $122 over the years.
