"City Nights" – Alan Cumming Fires Up XL For LGBT Benefit

The gaping hole on 42nd Street known as XL finally packed the house Saturday evening with Alan Cumming performing live on stage for a sold out crowd. The event was thrown for the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission with all of the proceeds going directly to the organization which provides emergency relief for those exposed to anti-LGBT violence and discrimination. Nice, no?

Cumming, dressed in a cute black t-shirt with a tux jacket printed on it, belted out song after song beautifully. (I was sold when he did a Hedwig Medley.) Emmy Award winning composer Lance Horne accompanied the show on an electric piano and Meta Weiss worked her cello. In between numbers he recounted various hilarious instances that occurred to him throughout his life including hiring a Long Island woman for a Tupperware party (Aunt Barbara perhaps?) and getting mistaken for a member of the Pet Shop Boys… “or Frankie Goes to Hollywood,” he exclaimed.

Everyone’s favorite nightlife mess, Richie Rich, appeared and hid on the sidelines for a few of Cumming’s songs but disappeared before the bitchy PR managers pushed and shoved their way to the main attraction once he finished up a brilliant mash-up of Katy Perry’s ‘Firework,’ Adele’s ‘Someone Like You,’ and Lady Gaga’s ‘Edge of Glory.’ Well played, Mr. Cumming. You sure had me quivering.
