Music Monday: DJ Steve Sidewalk on Madonna, Alphabeat and Coldplay

Madonna – “Girl Gone Wild”

This second single is definitely much better than “Give Me All You’re Luvin”. In 5 weeks Madonna’s first single made it to the top 10 then plumetted to 89, despite having a record breaking audience of 114 million people for her Super Bowl half time show.  In other words… an embarassing flop.  Sorry Madge fans, but we all know it.   However, I must say I absolutely LUV the LMFAO remix. They transformed it into a whole new song, but this is all about Madonna’s 2nd single.  Can she still prove to be relevant to today’s younger top 40 listening generation, as she has done for the last 30 some years?  ”Girl Gone Wild” is a hit for a Madonna fan.  Sounds very Hard Candy / Celebration-esque.  But it isn’t “wild” enough.  As much as I and my dance floor enjoy the song, it feels a little flat.  At a time when dance music is at an all time high and artists like Rihanna, Chris Brown and Havana Brown are taking it to a whole new level, I expected a more “modern” pushing the limits hard hitting beats from the Empress of Pop.   Don’t get me wrong, I love the song… but “Girl Gone Sort of Wild” is more fitting.  B+

Alphabeat – “Vacation”

Three years ago, Alphabeat released an amazing record called “The Beat is…”.  It was a throw back to the early 90s, channeling such artists as Real McCoy, LaBouche and Ace of Base.  It was a brilliant record.  Still one of my favorites.   Sadly, they quickly disappeared.  And now they’re back with a new single from their forthcoming album due out later this year.  Properly titled “Vacation”, perhaps a nod to their 3 year hiatus, this track is extremely very 80s.  Think Madonna’s “Holiday” meets Go Go’s “Vacation”. It would be hard to imagine they didn’t get inspired by these two songs and want to write a similar theme.  I really love the 80s influence but its not as fun as their 90s sound from the past album. Still good though!  B

Coldplay – “Paradise”

This is not a new new song but it came out last fall and is finally getting some traction.  Coldplay had a very lukewarm start as their first single “Every Teardrop is a Waterfall” failed to really make an impact.  I personally felt it was a poor choice.  ”Paradise” is a much better single. Catchy, upbeat and showcases the Coldplay America fell in love with.  ”Para Para Paradise” has been stuck in my head all day!  Infectious.
