One Million Moms Strike Again!

Fresh off trying to stop Ellen Degeneres from being the spokesperson for J.C. Penney because she is a lesbian and does not adhere to traditional family values, the conservative group, One Million Moms,  are at it once more.  This time they have set their sights on Geoffrey the Giraffe’s home turf, Toys ‘R’ Us, because they are selling a controversial new Archie comic featuring the wedding of openly gay character Kevin Keller.

According to the Huffington Post, the issue’s cover illustration shows Keller, an active U.S. military officer, taking the plunge with African-American doctor Clay Walker. Keller first meets Walker when he is his patient, being seen for injuries he acquired in Iraq.

Dan Walker, the author of the miniseries, said the following to the Associated Press:

“The world of Riverdale has to reflect contemporary culture and to show it as an accepting and diverse place. And that’s why Kevin is important, to show everybody is welcome in this all-American town we have embraced for over 70 years.”

But the One Million Moms do not see it that way. On their website they released a statement about Toys ‘R’ Us and the Archie comic:

“These comic books are sold at the front checkout counters so they are highly visible to employees, managers, customers and children. Unfortunately, children are now being exposed to same-sex marriage in a toy store. This is the last place a parent would expect to be confronted with questions from their children on topics that are too complicated for them to understand. Issues of this nature are being introduced too early and too soon, which is becoming extremely common and unnecessary.

The trip to the toy store turns into a premature discussion on sexual orientation and is completely uncalled for. Toys ‘R’ Us should be more responsible in the products they carry.”

Toys ‘R’ Us has yet to respond to the Moms.
