Former NYC Mayors Koch and Dinkins come out for gay marriage [video]

Two of New York City’s former Mayors, Ed Koch and David Dinkins, have lended their name and likeness to a major movement to legalize gay marriage in the Empire State.  The former Democratic rivals have each taped a video for the Human Rights Campaign who will pay to have the spots aired on television and in taxi cabs.

Both Koch and Dinkins are credited for working for gay rights while in office.

Koch, a life-long bachelor at 84, is often questioned about whether or not he is gay.  It’s something the former Mayor won’t talk about.

He once told the New York Times: “I do not want to add to the acceptability of asking every candidate, ‘Are you straight or gay or lesbian?’ and make it a legitimate question, so I don’t submit to that question. I don’t care if people think I’m gay because I don’t answer it. I’m flattered that at 84 people are interested in my sex life — and, it’s quite limited.”

Dinkins is actually the man who ended Koch’s time in office as Mayor by defeating him in 1989, but the two men are coming together now for a human right issue.

Current Mayor Andrew Cuomo is urging State Legislators and Senators to pass a marriage equality bill this season. He says he’ll sign it as soon as it comes across his desk.
